Parati

Parati is about 5½ hours drive from Campinas (or twice that if you travel during a holiday weekend), just into the state of Rio de Janeiro. The old town is beautiful and has been declared a national historical monument in its entirety. One can take a guided walk inland along the old gold trail, visiting some waterfalls and a 17th century cachaça distillery. Alternatively, take a trip on one of the boats which sail to the surrounding islands and beaches, stopping for swimming, snorkelling and a cerveja or two - it´s a taste of paradise. The beach at nearby Trindade is also great.
